The "Coating Canvas Jacket" was born from the design source of a hunting jacket, with the starting point of wanting an item that "looks like leather but is made of cotton."
At the 2024 Autumn/Winter collection pre-order event, many people experienced its texture and comfort firsthand, making it a highly anticipated item.
This time, we will talk about the Coating Canvas Jacket.
Designer Kono's motivation for creating the Coating Canvas series was his desire to "express the surface texture of synthetic fibers or leather using natural cotton material and printing techniques."
Since then, he has repeatedly tried and tested various methods to "how to achieve a similar texture and functionality."
As you can see in the photo, the finished garment has a texture that is indistinguishable from synthetic fibers or leather at first glance.
This is achieved by starting with a high-density woven oxford fabric, then applying urethane to its woven surface at a highly skilled printing factory in Kyoto. On top of that, a transparent foil coating is applied, and finally, it undergoes a揉み洗い (momiawarai - hand-rubbing/crumpling) process to create a wrinkled texture.
It is, so to speak, a "highly advanced fusion of the designer's ideas and the artisans' techniques."
Furthermore, the coating on the surface provides windproof and water-repellent properties, making it wearable even on rainy days. An additional benefit is that it is resistant to odor transfer, so you can wear it with peace of mind during this time of year when there are many dining occasions like year-end parties.
However, some might wonder, "Wouldn't it have been better to use synthetic fibers or leather instead of trying to make cotton resemble them?"
The answer lies in the attention to detail on the inner surface that touches the skin.
One of the distinguishing features of the Coating Canvas Jacket and other items in the Coating Canvas series is the pleasant feel against the skin and the lightness, precisely because the inner surface is cotton.
